Button Cell Batteries

Q1:What is a button battery?

A1:A button battery is a battery that looks like a coin. It is a small flat cylindrical single cell with a height smaller than its diameter. According to the chemical composition, it can be divided into non-lithium button batteries (such as LR44 alkaline button batteries) and lithium button batteries (such as CR2032 lithium manganese batteries).

Button batteries are small in size, with a maximum diameter of 32mm and a thickness ranging from 1mm to 11mm. They are low-cost and easy to use.

Among them, CR2032 is the most common model, with a diameter of 20mm and a thickness of 3.2mm. It uses two lithium batteries in series to provide a voltage of 3V. Button batteries are widely used in consumer electronics and household devices such as electronic toys, clocks, calculators, car keys, cameras, electronic scales, and music greeting cards.

Q2:What are the application scenarios of button batteries?

A2:Button batteries are commonly used in toys and hearing aids. They are also used in calculators, remote controls, keyless entry devices, watches, and other small household devices. There may be several button batteries in a tiny device such as an electronic watch or an electric toy car because the amount of power they can provide is very limited. But sometimes, a device will only have one battery to power it.

Q3:How long can a button battery last?

A3:The service life of a button cell battery depends mainly on its capacity and load conditions. For example, the common CR2032 button cell battery has a service life of 2 to 5 years under normal use. However, lithium button cells have a stronger endurance and can be used for a longer time. Today, some high-efficiency and durable batteries (also called ultra-large capacity batteries) are available on the market, with a service life of up to 10 years, suitable for devices with high battery life requirements.

Q4:What are the types of button batteries

A4:There are many types of button batteries, most of which are named according to the materials used, such as silver oxide batteries, lithium batteries, alkaline manganese batteries, etc. Among them, some button batteries are rechargeable, while others are disposable primary batteries and cannot be reused. Different types of button batteries are suitable for different devices due to their characteristics. For example, CR2032 button batteries are non-rechargeable batteries and need to be replaced after use.

The main difference between button batteries is their internal materials and electrochemical systems. In addition, different types of button batteries have different output voltages, usually ranging from 1V to 3V.

Q5:Are button batteries toxic to the human body?

A5:Swallowing a button battery may cause chest pain and stomach discomfort, or even lead to serious health problems. In the case of lithium batteries, this can quickly lead to dangerous consequences such as electrolyte imbalance. To avoid accidents, it is recommended to store the battery in a safe place and keep it away from children to reduce the risk of swallowing the battery.
